Laphroaig

Opinions Welcome — The Most Divisive Whisky on Earth

Founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers, Laphroaig sits on the southern shore of Islay, where Atlantic waves literally crash against the warehouse walls. The sea doesn't just surround Laphroaig — it permeates the whisky itself, adding the briny, maritime character that defines the brand.

Laphroaig is one of the last distilleries to maintain its own floor maltings — a labour-intensive process where barley is spread on a malting floor and turned by hand for seven days. Only 20% of their malt is produced this way now, but it contributes a crucial element to the character.

The Story

Founded 1815

The distillery's most famous custodian was Bessie Williamson, who ran Laphroaig from 1954 to 1972 — one of the first women to manage a Scottish distillery. Under her stewardship, the whisky gained its reputation for uncompromising character. She reportedly said: 'If they don't like the taste, they haven't tried hard enough.'

The Laphroaig Style

Laphroaig's distinctive medicinal character comes from its floor maltings and the specific peat used — coastal Islay peat rich in mosses and seaweed rather than the heathery peat of the mainland. This gives the smoke a phenolic, antiseptic quality unique to Laphroaig.

The distillery uses relatively small stills and a fast distillation that retains more of the heavier flavour compounds. Combined with maturation in ex-bourbon barrels in seaside warehouses, you get a whisky that tastes like the ocean smells — in the best possible way.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask

Double-matured in standard barrels then quarter casks (smaller barrels = more wood contact), this expression adds layers of vanilla and coconut to the classic Laphroaig smoke. It's like Laphroaig wearing a velvet glove — same punch, smoother delivery.
