Lagavulin

Islay's Liquid Smoke, Refined to Perfection

Lagavulin Bay has been home to distilling since at least the 1740s, when ten small illegal stills operated in the area. John Johnston formalised operations in 1816, and by the mid-19th century, Lagavulin had become one of the most important distilleries in Scotland.

The distillery's golden era began when it was selected for Diageo's Classic Malts collection in 1988. The 16 Year Old became the standard-bearer for the series — and for Islay itself. When whisky writer Michael Jackson called it 'the most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies,' he wasn't exaggerating.

The Story

Founded 1816

In recent years, Lagavulin has gained an unexpected pop-culture following, partly thanks to actor Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation), whose meditative YouTube videos of him sipping Lagavulin by a fireplace became viral sensations. Sometimes the best marketing is just honesty.

The Lagavulin Style

Lagavulin uses heavily peated malt (around 35 ppm phenols) but achieves elegance through two critical factors: extremely slow distillation through pear-shaped stills, and long maturation in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.

The slow distillation — the spirit takes over five hours to pass through the spirit still — strips away harsh compounds and concentrates the sweeter elements of the peat smoke. The result is whisky that smells like a beach bonfire but tastes like liquid velvet.

Lagavulin 16 Year Old

The definitive Islay expression. Sixteen years of maturation transforms intense peat smoke into something contemplative and multi-layered — dried fruit, salt, leather, and a finish that lingers like a campfire memory the morning after.
