Glenmorangie

Unnecessarily Well Made — Scotland's Tallest Stills, Finest Spirit

William Matheson converted a brewery in Tain, Ross-shire, into a distillery in 1843, using tall, narrow-necked stills modelled on gin stills he'd seen in London. The extra height filtered out heavier flavour compounds, producing a spirit of remarkable purity.

Glenmorangie pioneered the 'wood finish' technique in the 1990s, transferring mature whisky into different cask types (port, sherry, Sauternes) for additional maturation. This innovation — now copied industry-wide — created the popular Lasanta (sherry), Quinta Ruban (port), and Nectar d'Or (Sauternes) expressions.

The Story

Founded 1843

In 2004, LVMH acquired Glenmorangie (and Ardbeg), providing investment while preserving the distillery's independence. Dr Bill Lumsden, the Director of Distilling, has become one of the most respected figures in whisky for his creative cask experiments and unwavering quality standards.

The Glenmorangie Style

The combination of Scotland's tallest stills and hard, mineral-rich water from the Tarlogie Springs produces a spirit of exceptional purity and elegance. The new-make spirit is light, fruity, and floral — a perfect canvas for cask experimentation.

Glenmorangie uses only first and second-fill casks (never third-fill), meaning the wood is always active and contributing flavour. The Original 10 Year Old, matured entirely in ex-bourbon casks, showcases the pure house style: vanilla, peach, citrus, and a honeyed creaminess.
